Though you may never need to know how to shim a pair of handcuffs, the knowledge, and the escape gear to do it could be a lifesaver if you ever need to. Below are basic instructions on how to pick handcuffs.

Place your shim between the teeth of the handcuff and push in as far as it will go.

With pressure on the shim (pushing against the resistance you feel on the shim) gently tighten the handcuffs, allowing the shim to slip in between the teeth.

You’ll feel the shim slide further into the handcuff, now you can open the handcuffs, remember to keep pressure on the shim you don’t want to accidentally re-engage the handcuffs.
